The Suitability and Acceptability of the Think-Aloud Method to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Adults

Background There is a long history of research being conducted on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples that has offered questionable benefit but occasioned great distress distrust. Using methods are suitable acceptable to critically important step towards restoring trust improving the accessibility relevancy better addresses needs peoples. The current aims qualitatively evaluate peoples’ perceptions suitability acceptability engaging in think-aloud interview embedded an individual yarn; yarn. Methods We employed method as part larger What Matters 2Adults study. participants were engaged yarn, then immediately following, follow-up yarn explore method. yarns audio recorded, transcribed verbatim, analysed utilising reflexive thematic analysis with Indigenous epistemological lens. Results A total 17 adults participated our Participants reported taking was acceptable, not difficult less onerous than writing down their thoughts. Engaging social before ensured they comfortable verbalising assured them process confidential. Thinking out loud gave opportunity reflect think about responses. Some found by thinking able understand statements own mind felt therefore provide more authentic response. Because these benefits, conveyed vitally component testing items developing measures for people. Conclusions Overall, study use studies involve them.
